First meeting Tuesday 5th May 2026 @ 1pm.
The first meeting of this new group will be on Tuesday 5th May @ 1pm and then on the first Tuesday of the month thereafter.
Steve Pickthall, the Group Facilitator, will use YouTube to access performances of complete works from the seventeenth century to the present day. Some of these will be modern performances, others will be historical (like Jacqueline du Pre's performance of the Elgar Cello Concerto). Steve will involve members in choosing works for the group to watch and listen to on every third meeting of the group in an attempt to include everybody's interests (so the first meeting of this type will be on 7th July).
This group should interest members who already attend and enjoy classical concerts, those who have a basic knowledge of classical repertoire but wish to expand this, and people who are curious about an area of music that remains a mystery for them. It can be very difficult to know where to start!
Contrary to popular belief, classical music is fun, and people who attend a classical concert do not have to wear evening dress. They would look out of place if they did. T-shirt and jeans are perfectly acceptable, and most people who attend a classical concert wear casual dress.
Many people who attend classical concerts make an evening of it by including drinks and a meal. Eventually the Classical Music Appreciation Group may book concerts (and drinks and a meal) for members as a group outing. This is an issue for discussion by group members and would not be compulsory!
So why not try something different, make friends with a similar interest, or simply come along to enjoy yourself. I bet you will be surprised!'
